The Origin of Life / L’Origine du Monde
An Ottoman diplomat commissioned the French painter Gustave Corbet to paint this work in 1866. There is some controversy as to whom the model may have been. The Irish model Joanna Hifferman, the dancer Constance Quéniaux or the courtesan Marie-Anne Detourbay, the diplomat’s mistress. Some argue that he must have painted a corpse. In 1955, the painting was put on auction and sold for 1.5 million francs. The new owners were the psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan and his wife. They placed the painting in their holiday home. After Lacan’s death, his family made a deal with the French Minister of Finance to pay off their inheritance tax by transferring the painting to the State. It was hung in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris in 1995. There she hangs, alone, on a wall. Pinioned, reduced to her pubic region. I have read that the painting has been described as straightforward and artlessly fresh, unblemished and lyrical. It makes me think: Do we need anything from a woman other than her inner and outer sex organ and anus? Aren’t the arms, legs, torso and head superfluous?
